ROUTES FOR INTERVENTION

The following routes of intervention would be decided with full participation of community leadership and with the guidance and assistance of organization with which we have formed partnership.
A more comprehensive list will be developed as the involvement increases.

  1. Identify community leaders and invite them to become part of a community Forum designed to include all members of the community in the identification of needs and the planning of the project.
  2. Assist the community development facilitator {CDF} to maintain ongoing interest and involvement in the community. This is a salaried position.
  3. As the need arises for expansion of the project, Identify the train Team Leaders {TL} would be responsible for the leadership, monitoring and control of the CCW’s day to day activities and record keeping. The CCW’S report directly to him\her. This is a salaried position.
  4. Identification and training of child care workers who are responsible for care and visitation of families. Child care workers would work on a stipendiary basis with assistance wit food {once a food parcels programme is implemented} and transportation costs. This is a half day position.
  5. Ideally, the community developed facilitator, Team Leader’s and child care workers would be members of the Thokoza community.
  6. Establishment of an after school centre from which all operations are run {schematic}.
  7. Identification of children who have lost their parents to AIDS and are need of support on an ongoing basis.

These children will be from:

  • Child headed household
  • Granny headed household
  • Potential orphans i.e. whose parent\s health is already seriously compromised through HIV\AIDS.
As the project grew and funding was available, we would consider extending the programme to include other categories of venerable children.
  1. Maintain accurate record keeping system, so that the children cared for are properly tracked and the value of the interventions monitored this enables us to identify and follow up any specific needs the child may have. It also serves to formalize the care workers roles and enable the management committee to establish that the proper daily interventions are occurring.
  2. Registration of children on the data base established for record keeping purposes.
  3. Registration of children at the Setshabelo after School Centre.
  4. Identification for children at high risk that may require placement in foster care through Johannesburg Child welfare.
  5. Run skills and education workshops from the after school centre to assist the children to prepare for adulthood, enable them to competently care for their siblings where necessary, and equip them for the workplace.
  6. Interaction with schools in the area to identify children’s needs. HIV\AIDS education and training programs in the community we are working in as well as the community supporting the project.
  7. Implementation of feeding and \or food parcels schemes where needed.
  8. Cultivation of vegetable gardens to produce fresh vegetables to supplement feeding schemes.
  9. Consultation with statutory bodies to ensure that our recipient children have access to their basic rights.
  10. Ensure that persons trained in counselling and health care are available for consultation.
  11. Establish a heath care referral system.
  12. Broaden the awareness of the project to all churches, schools, community centres and other social groups within our geographic area.
  13. Run a- adopt- a- child\sponsor-a-child-program within our church, community and other organizations where interest has been indicated. This would include developing awareness in business and through the website dedicated to Setshabelo (website currently under construction).
